  15.      This package contains OS/2 Presentation Manager drivers for ATI
  16. VGA Wonder video adapters, for the 800x600x256c and 1024x768x256c
  17. resolutions. They have been tested on IBM OS/2 2.0. From version 1.01,
  18. they no longer work on OS/2 1.x.

  27.      Please read this file carefully before trying to install the PM
  28. drivers. If you don't, OS/2 could become corrupted forcing you to
  29. reinstall it.

  31.      IMPORTANT: I (the author) have absolutely no contact with ATI
  32. Technologies Inc. I have developed this driver during my spare time,
  33. and I am distributing it as FREEWARE. However I will greatly
  34. appreciate any donation, since I have spent a considerable amout of
  35. time (40000 ASM lines...).

  82. Installation

  85.      Let's suppose you want to install the 800x600x256c driver. The
  86. file ATI800-8.DLL is a replacement for the OS/2 file DISPLAY.DLL.
  87.      From version 1.01, the driver uses BVHSVGA to switch to the SVGA
  88. mode. So you should install SVGA support BEFORE installing the PM
  89. driver. Type SVGA ON in a full screen DOS session to do so (for
  90. further information, refer to the OS/2 V2 documentation). Then when
  91. you type SVGA STATUS (in a full screen dos session), OS/2 should
  92. report that you have an ATI chipset.
  93.      
  94.       To install the PM driver complete the following steps:
  95.  
  96. 1) Uncompress the ATI800-8.DLL somewhere on your disk.
  97.  
  98. 2) The file DISPLAY.DLL is usually in the \OS2\DLL directory of the
  99.    boot drive. But you CAN'T replace this file while OS/2 is running.
  100.    So boot DOS to replace it. The key point is to always keep a backup
  101.    of this file, in case the ATI driver would not work.
  102.  
  103.      So for instance:

  105.    C:>CD \OS2\DLL
  106.    C:\OS2\DLL> REN DISPLAY.DLL DISPLAY.OLD
  107.    C:\OS2\DLL> REN ATI800-8.DLL DISPLAY.DLL
  108.  
  109.      Note: if you installed OS/2 on an HPFS partition, you will have
  110. to boot on the installation diskette. When the IBM logo appears, press
  111. ESCAPE to have access to an OS/2 command prompt. Then you will be able
  112. to see your HPFS disk, and replace the DISPLAY.DLL file.
  113.  
  114. 3) Reboot your computer. If the PM screen doesn't show up in 800x600,
  115.    then there might be a problem with your ATI adapter... Replace the
  116.    DISPLAY.DLL file with the old display driver you backed up,
  117.    DISPLAY.OLD. Try to contact me to fix the problem.

  119. Known problems with the 1024x768x256 driver:
  120.  
  121.      For unknown reasons, the BVHSVGA DLL is not able to switch to a
  122. non-interlaced 1024x768x256 mode. If this mode doesn't work on your
  123. computer, try to replace the SVGADATA.PMI file in the \OS2 directory
  124. by the one included in this package.
  125.      Also, due to a bug in VSVGA.SYS, you may have problems with
  126. "twinkling" colors. Should this happen, try to open a FULL SCREEN DOS
  127. session just after booting.

  133.      The 256-color drivers do not work on old ATI Wonder adapters
  134. (chip rev 1, without dual-page mode).
  135.      For the 1024x768x256 resolution, you need 1Mb on your video card.
  136.      Warning: a 1024x768 background picture consumes 768Kb of main
  137. memory! I do not recommend such pictures if you don't have at least
  138. 10Mb of memory.
  139.      These drivers are not real 2.0 drivers: no new icon pointers, no
  140. palette manager functions, etc. I am still waiting for IBM to provide
  141. me 2.0 sample source code...
